Wal-Mart Being Sued After Denying Health Insurance To Gay Worker's Wife

American store giant Wal-Mart have found themselves in hot soup after they refused to give health insurance to the wife of one of their workers who happens to be gay. On Tuesday that said gay worker took the issue to the courts where he sued Wal-Mart for violating the gender discrimination laws that are in place.

Last year Wal-Mart began offering health insurance to same-sex married couples after the U.S. Supreme Court back in 2013 removed the biggest hindrance, the Defense of Marriage Act, that basically made it impossible for same-sex couples to get the benefits that other married couples were receiving.

According to the lawsuit, gay workers in Wal-Mart still work with the fear that one day they might actually end up losing health coverage for their spouses.

"Benefits provided by Wal-Mart as a matter of grace ... are not secure and could potentially be withdrawn just when large health care costs are incurred," the lawsuit read. It actually gets worse, the lawsuit goes on to point out that back in 2012 a worker by the name Jackie Cote, lost her wife Diana Smithson after developing cancer and with Wal-Mart denying to offer her insurance she ended up having a medical debt that totaled up to 150,000 U.S. Dollars.

Wal-Mart is yet to respond to the said claims.
